Bushrod honors planned
THE FREE LANCE-STAR, FREDERICKSBURG, VA. | CATHY DYSON | Sun, May 30, 6:48 AM
May 30--The day after King George County groups honor Jermon Bushrod for the allegiance he has shown his hometown, the Super Bowl champion will try to pass along some of his skills to local kids.
Bushrod, who grew up in King George and graduated from King George High School, will be the center of attention at two events next month.
The first, on Friday, June 11, will give residents a chance to congratulate Bushrod on his accomplishments. The 25-year-old was the starting left tackle for the New Orleans Saints, who won the Super Bowl in February.
The second event, on the morning of Saturday, June 12, will be a football camp for players ages 6 to 13. Bushrod will stress his motto of "Visualize and Rize."
"That's going to be the whole theme," said George Major, one of Bushrod's coaches in high school, "that anyone from anywhere can do it, that you can reach for the stars and rise up and get them."
Major is helping organize the events, which will benefit the King George High football program. Each event costs $15 per person.
The more formal "Celebration" on Friday starts at 6 p.m. at King George High.
Supervisors, School Board members and the NAACP will recognize Bushrod during the ceremony. So will coaches who have worked with him, from his days in Little League to his years at Towson University.
"The biggest thing we're going to fight is getting through these without coaches crying," Major said. "People are very touched that he remembered them and asked them to speak."
Bushrod will provide items that he has autographed, as well as some signed by other players, at an auction that night. No doubt he'll shake a lot of hands and pose for photos as his jersey is retired from King George schools.
Major and other organizers probably shouldn't keep Bushrod out too late on Friday, because the Saturday camp starts bright and early, at 8 a.m.
The camp will focus on building character and overall knowledge of the game. Bushrod and other leaders will emphasize positioning, skills and fundamentals.
Officials are expecting a big turnout for both events, as they pay tribute to one of their own who has come back to the county several times since the championship game to sign autographs and greet people.
"So many times, when people become famous, they forget where they come from," said King George Supervisor Cedell Brooks Jr., who originally suggested an event to honor Bushrod. "Jermon is dedicated to remembering those who helped him get where he is today. He's a very humble young man, and he's concerned about people. That's the way his family is, too."
